In short: Tesserian has no accounts, no advertising, and no third-party analytics. By default the game reports only anonymous milestone counters (“someone solved level 7”) that cannot be linked to you. Optionally you can turn on “Progress Sharing — With Quest Name” to appear on the highscore list; switching it back off automatically deletes your personal data from our server.

Your game progress (solved levels, tutorial progress) and your settings are stored locally on your headset only. They are never uploaded as such and are removed when you uninstall the app.
To learn where players get stuck, how far they come, and which headsets to optimize for, the game reports the following milestone events to our own server: a level was entered (attempted) for the first time on this installation, a level was solved for the first time, a tutorial step / the tutorial / the intro was completed for the first time, and — once per installation — the headset model name (for example “Meta Quest 3”; a model name is shared by every headset of that type and does not identify a device). Each event contains only the milestone itself, the app version, a timestamp, and a random ID that identifies the event (so a retried upload is not counted twice) — no user ID, device ID or serial number, account ID, or name. Each milestone is sent at most once per installation.
Nothing in these events can be linked to you or to any other event, so this baseline telemetry is anonymous data and does not fall under the GDPR (Recital 26). It cannot be turned off, but it also cannot identify you.
In the game (on the Highscores page) you can switch Progress Sharing from Anonymous (default) to With Quest Name. Only then do we process personal data:
Purpose: displaying the highscore list inside the game (player name and score). Legal basis: your consent, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, given by choosing “With Quest Name”.
Withdrawal is one switch: setting Progress Sharing back to Anonymous withdraws your consent. The app then sends a removal order and the server automatically deletes your name, installation ID, and progress snapshots; the anonymous milestone counters remain (they no longer contain anything about you). You disappear from the highscore list. If you uninstalled the app and can no longer use the switch, e-mail us (address above) and we will delete the data the same way.
Telemetry and highscores are handled by our own server software on shared hosting at
Alfahosting GmbH, Halle (Saale), Germany (eretrandre.org). The application itself
stores no IP addresses. As with virtually every web server, the hosting provider's access
logs record the IP address, time, and requested URL of each connection for security and
operations (legal basis: legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR); these logs are managed and
routinely rotated by the hosting provider and are not used by us to identify players.
Tesserian runs on Meta Quest. Independently of this policy, Meta Platforms processes data as platform operator (store, entitlement check, and — only on the “With Quest Name” tier — providing your public user name to the app). For this, see the Meta Privacy Policy. Tesserian itself contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
Anonymous milestone counters are kept indefinitely (they contain no personal data). Identified-tier data (name, installation ID, snapshots) is kept until you switch back to Anonymous or request deletion, whichever comes first.
Where we process your personal data you have the rights of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20), and objection (Art. 21), as well as the right to withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) — in Tesserian: the Progress-Sharing switch). You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR).
Note: anonymous milestone events cannot be attributed to a person, so requests concerning them cannot be fulfilled (Art. 11 GDPR) — there is nothing linking them to you.
We will update this policy when the game's data processing changes (for example, new features). The current version is always available at this address.
